One Year Later...

We call this our Preservation Area; I suppose it would also be considered native prairie.  Essentially, we don’t mow part of the field, leave it to nature to manage, and watch to see what comes up.  This morning I’ve seen 3 or 4 varieties of butterflies and numerous dragonflies skimming across the tops of the plants.  I’ve seen birds and heard their songs and have been delighting in a new pink wildflower (prairie gerardia) that has popped out in recent days.  We’ve had a lot of rain and gloomy weather of late, but today the sun is out, the sky is an intense and true blue with lazily drifting cumulus clouds sparkling in the sunlight.  They are almost too bright to look at directly.

However, even as I write this I am reminded of the natural disaster being caused by Hurricane Florence on the east coast and my heart goes out to all the people being affected by it. Here at Homeward Farm our memories of Hurricane Harvey’s affect on us just a year ago are still very alive and we join our hearts and our prayers with the ones in need today.  May they quickly recover, may homes and businesses be rebuilt, may the sorrow, hardship and traumas they are enduring be comforted and relieved. We pray for mercy.
